This represents the following potential savings: The equivalent annual electrical output of about 44 large electric power plants (1000 megawatts each) More than $30 billion in savings at today’s electricity prices  A 33% decrease in total electricity consumption for lighting, compared to a scenario with no LEDs. The amount of electricity saved would be greater than the total amount of energy used to light all U.S. homes today.

ICSC spokeswoman Erin Hershkowitz said shopping centers will spend the money to attract customers and offer something that will give them a reason to stay and shop. “Having holiday decorations and having a Santa is traditional, people expect it, and it helps get people in the mood,” Hershkowitz said. “It’s part of the whole holiday experience.” Tilley said the basic strategy is to give consumers a reason to come to the mall. “It’s very competitive in retail right now.” Tilley said. “People are crunched for time, consumers can shop on the Internet, and then you have competition from the big-box stores.”

Mosca Design & holiday light displays in the Raleigh area this year, George Mosca of Mosca Design believes you may have to drive a little ways to see the really good stuff.

Raleigh’s Celebration of Lights, the annual holiday drive-through event held at Walnut Creek amphitheater was canceled for 2007. This is sad for the kids who were looking forward to it, but the promoters claim it was fantastic for them to just break even each year. There are some North Carolina favorites, such as Duke Chapel, but aside from some of the smaller neighborhood displays, you’re going to have to drive a little to see the larger Led Light Shows.

One idea to this is the Holiday Lights Trolley, which runs through downtown Raleigh, along some of the historic neighborhoods and along the local business that populate the area. The ride lasts about an hour, and reservations are needed. The ride begins in Historic Mordecai Park, located at Mimosa Street, in Raleigh. Prices range from $4.00 – $8.00. The entire car ride is filled with scenery, holiday message boards, flying reindeer, and holiday flowers. The show runs each night from 6:00pm – 11:00pm, Through January 1st. To ensure safe commercial LED lights here are some tips from Mosca Design 

The UL Listing on a product label guarantees that representative samples of the product have been tested and comply with applicable commercial safety requirements.

Also, make sure you get the right set — for indoor use, outdoor use or both.
Do not overload electrical circuits. Circuits in older homes carry a maximum of 15 amps. Circuits in most new homes can carry 20 amps or 2,400 watts each.

To figure out your holiday lighting load, multiply the number of bulbs by the number of watts per bulb (see above chart). Be sure to include house lamps, appliances and other electrical equipment on the same circuit.
Before you decorate, check light sets for frayed wires, damaged sockets or cracked insulation. If you find defects, replace the entire set.
Avoid fire by keeping your natural tree well watered and keeping extension cords and light sets away from the water. Light the tree only when you are at home and awake to enjoy it. Keep a fire extinguisher handy and your smoke detectors in good working order.
Unplug indoor tree lights before watering the tree, and turn off all electrical decorations before leaving home or going to bed.
For outdoor lighting, use a ground fault circuit interrupter on each circuit. If current leaks through frayed or damaged wires, the interrupter shuts it off. Most hardware stores carry these at a cost of $9 to $12.
Be careful with ladders! Don’t stand higher than the top two steps, and keep them at least ten feet away from overhead power lines.

“Looking out here, what do you think?” Doug said. “I dare the average person to tell me if it’s incandescent or LED.”

It’s the environmentalists’ equivalent of the Iron Man. Looking at Doug’ commercial retail space, it’s difficult to tell the difference. But amid the white snowflakes, red arches and other brightly lit fare, the skeleton of a blue stag and spiral tree burn cool to the touch when Doug pinches one between his fingers, the sign of energy-saving lights.

Doug is among a growing number of Business Owners in the Durham & Raleigh area — better known as Christmas Tree Lane every December — and throughout Wake County who are turning a white Christmas green.

Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, which use a filament and glass case, LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, use electronics covered in plastic.

LEDs save money and energy consumption, Doug said. Because they don’t heat up, they’re safer on trees and less likely to overload a circuit.

They also help consumers save money. Doug spends about $180 a month on electricity. During Christmas, it jumps an additional $450. As manufacturers offer more displays with LEDs, he converts over. This year it was the stag, the spiral tree and several multi-colored strands that drape his shrubbery. With such minor changes, he figures his bill will drop about $75.

“But it’s not just money,” he said. “It’s the idea that we help the environment.”

Many others seem inspired by former Vice President Al Gore’s consciousness-raising effort to reduce global warming, said Joe Yahner, Ventura’s environmental services supervisor.

Edison promotes LEDs and compact fluorescent light bulbs, which also draw significantly less power than incandescent bulbs.

While some consumers fret that new technology costs more, Edison counters they will save money in the long run, Gonzales said.

“They last five times longer, and they use significantly less electricity,” he said of energy saving lights.

For instance, chargers for cell phones and MP3 players suck electricity while plugged in, even when they’re not charging anything, George Mosca said. So do household appliances such as coffee makers with clocks.George Mosca suggested consumers unplug them when not in use.

“Most people don’t know how much energy they consume,” George Mosca said, “because we’re just using it all the time.”

Every year, the elaborate decorations — including camels, manger scenes, reindeer hauling Santa from a chimney and light shows that respond to music — draw thousands of people from as far as Virginia.
